Stephanie's Journal It's been so long since I've written on here that I'm not sure how to start. Isn't that weird?.... As you all know already I took the Nurse Aide Training Program with Julia. It was so much fun, and such hard work. (Fun in class, hard work in clinicals.) I had a hard time in clinicals. I seemed to get very deeply saddened very easily. Which doesn't make a hard job any easier. Anyway... I've applied for the state test already, and I am taking it in Richmond on August 7. I am so nervous about the practical part of the test. Just a few slipups and I'll fail. Which will ruin my job opportunities. I applied to and had an interview at Maryview hospital. I was hired, with the condition that I pass my state certification. No pressure, mind you! I can't start working until I pass. But my orientation is August 2,3,and 4. Everyone is really nice at Maryview. They all call 'hi' to each other by name as we walk down the hall. The day after I graduated from the NATP, I left for Nags Head with Sarah and her family. It was a blast! Some of the highlights: jet skiing, making friends(or acquaintance, at least) with a girl from Switzerland, seeing the sun come up every morning, riding tons of waves, getting a great tan, climbing Jockey's Ridge, going fishing, having a long walk and talk on the beach with Sarah, meeting a ten year old male who thought that I was 13 "or maybe my age..."(I didn't think I looked that young!), and I can't think of anything else right now. I left a day early and drove back home so I could meet my mom and two little brothers to drive to PA for a family reunion. It was great! It consisted of my grandpa, his four sisters, and their families. It was so cool to meet all of them, and I have great pictures of them now. One of my mom's cousins family lived in Russia for 9 years. Even their 5 year old is bilingual! One of my grandpa's sisters entire family is mennonite, complete with the standard mennonite dress and caps. It was so cute. They are such beautiful people! And the 7-month old baby was the most alive of any I've ever seen... she didn't care who held her, and she just kept looking around and touching things as if she couldn't get enough visual and tactile stimulation. I never heard her cry. That night I went out to a movie(I, Robot) with two cousins and two brothers. It was so much fun, except the part where we got lost on the way to the movie theatre! And the part where I got hit on by a twelve-year old. (What is it with me and little boys?) By the time we got home it was twelve and I was dead tired. That's all for now, I am tired of typing. Current mood: woohoo! Has anyone ever played a game called "Pig Pong"? It is from the late 80's. Well, we were over at someone's house for dinner, and afterwards the father pulled out this game. It consists of a net, a little lightweight paper ball, and four pigs. You have to use the little pigs to blow the ball over the net. They are like little squeeze toys that blow air. There are actually fouls: "snouting" (haha), "hogging the court" (hahahaha) etc. I laughed so hard I felt like I was going to throw up. And the father was so serious about it, too. "You don't want to get your pig hot" "is your pig hot?You might want to let it cool down or else it doesn't work right." You just had to be there. I can't believe that game actually exists!! Current mood: Why is there so much pain in the world??? Current mood: confused and claustrophobic. I'm not sure what to write about because I haven't been on here in months.Maybe what I am doing now will do, because I don't have time to chronicle my life over the past several months. I am currently in PA. I have been here since Friday afternoon. I stayed with my Nanny and Pappy overnight on Friday and most of Saturday. An aunt and uncle that I don't see very often came to dinner on Friday. Nanny and I made cookies(sand tarts) together on Saturday. I enjoyed that, and it seemed to just make her day. Good times! We took several pictures, including many of the view from their back yard. Then I drove to my aunt and uncle's house, arriving at their house at around 5 PM on Saturday. We ate and hung out. My brother Ben arrived at about 11 PM, and neaarly knocked me over with a big bear hug. :} We talked until nearly 1:30, when we finally decided that we should go to bed to better facilitate wakefulness in church the next morning. Church this morning was uneventful. There was no designated college class, or at least no teacher for it, so we all just hung out and drank hot drinks until time for service. The pastor had a humorous and intelligent way to get his point across, but used too many words and dramatic pauses and intonations, so he nearly lost me anyway. The only thing that saved me was that I was intrigued by trying to figure out if his sermon had some kind of point to it. It did, and it was neat when he finally got around it. Oh, and I was also amused at one point because: I was falling asleep and trying not to, when I noticed an old man in the choir grinning amusedly in what seemed to be my direction. And it amused me that someone was amused at my difficulty. Then after church I had planned to go to a different relations house to visit and also talk about a hobby(knitting/crocheting) with one of my male relatives who holds the same hobby. (There probably was an eaasier way to say that last sentence.) But, he called and said that his wife was sick, so he will call me tomorrow to either reschedule or cancel. So now I sit here bored with little to do. Although I am glad to finally get back on LJ! Hope you guys are having a great break! Current mood: Yesterday was such a great day! It began with enjoying my history teacher's dry, sarcastic humor, moved on into checking my email during class, then on to Main Street. That was a fun experience; last year I didn't go to it. N, Eric, and I manned the table for most of the time, with B and J hanging out for quite a bit. Then A and R showed up at the end! It was almost like an Unoite meeting. Sam and his girlfriend showed up, and Rodney scared B again! The sight of J and N playing football/soccer with empty soda cans, and N head-kicking it was quite amusing. And B got her face caricaturized(is that a word?)! It was so pretty-somehow the artist captured her smiling eyes! After we were forced to disband by cleanup crews and impending classes, I went to the sad tree. It is so peaceful there, just lying there and watching the sun through gently wafting branches. I didn't fall asleep this time, however. Then I went to Chem lab. This went by fast, since it was more interesting and complicated than last time, yet still not that hard. The bad part about this is that my lab partner went to pick up a beaker full of hot water(with an evaporating dish that had salicylic acid dissolved in ethanol on top of the beaker) with tongs. Not a good idea, and I will say that I had asked her to wait. The tongs, or her hands, or whatever slipped, pouring over me hot water, salicylic acid, and ethanol; and the glass beaker and evaporating dish clattered onto the counter. How embarassing! At least they didn't break. Then was MSDA. Bad news: only 3 new people. Good news: they are all boys. So genders were pretty well matched this time, yet still we managed to dance less than last week. Oh, well. And now there is even a sign language sign to describe me!!(evil) *exasperated sigh* Also, J-n has this weird new move that is actually fun, I guess because it is so weird. (I tried to describe it, but it just sounded wrong, so now I am writing this instead.) Oh, and N's exit was classic! (As was his new 'smooth' start to a dance!) Then was home(finally). I had been at school for 14 hours; from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm. It was so nice to get home and curl up with s. and talk. perfect ending to a perfect day. thanks to all my friends; you all are so much fun! (B and R: are we still on for Thurs.? I am available whenever, just let me know when to show up!) Current mood: Some quotes from DCDance Newsletter:(I especially like the last one!) Observation: "You know you're a competition Dancer when happy hour is a nap." Overheard: "I started out with nothing and still have most of it left. " Remember: Amateurs built the ark. Professionals built the Titanic. "All the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill the history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill at dancing." - Moliere Current mood: I just wanted to say hi! I am in class right now! My TA is from Turkey! THis will be fun! I think I will go continue my nursing scholarship search now! BTW, History is going to be a love/hate relationship for me. I know like half the people in the class, yet it will be a Lot of work(alot of facts to know, essay questions on tests, and 10 page research paper) Oh well. Current mood: As usual, ODU has made the first day as hard as they possibly can. What made them think it was a good idea to close the parking garage??? Maybe they thought it would be fun to play around with the 'green' freshman? Who knows? I certainly don't. So cars circle the lots like sharks, following their prey, a lone student carrying a bookbag, hoping that it will get in its car and leave. After losing parking spaces several times to poor timing and bad luck, and after following MY prey for a few minutes only to discover that she was not actually leaving, I remembered that the Constant parking garage had been used for students last year. So shouldn't it be open now?? It was. Ah. Row after sweet row of empty parking spaces. Now what I am trying to figure out is why the people that were standing in front of the other garage to tell sharks like me that it was closed didn't tell us that the Constant was open. Many people don't realize this. To quote esselle: Oy vey! Current mood: So I and the girls arrived at church at 9:30. We assembled salads(130+) by mixing several bagged salads(2 kinds) together and putting them on all the plates. The plates were on trays so they could go back in the fridge, seeing as the meal wasn't 'til at least 3:30. Then 2 cucumber slices and 2 cherry tomatoes had to be individually placed on each plate before the trays went back in the fridge. Oh, I forgot to mention that before the salad assembly we had made endless amounts of rolls. (There was enough for 16 for each of the 19 tables, plus at least a hundred extra, and we even made soft pretzels with the extra dough. Yum!) I made probably 20-25 gallons of iced tea, 12 of those were orange iced tea(just add a can of frozen orange juice to a gallon of iced tea. I also made cups of ranch and french dressing for the salad, one of each for each table. Also creamer containers were placed on each table. We had to place two pitchers of drink on each table, one with water and one with iced tea. While all this was going on the meal was also being cooked. Beef( with optional a jus{spelling?} sauce, breaded chicken(with optional orange glaze), rice, potatos with a cheese topping, and vegetables(unsure what kind...) . That may sound simple, but it was all homemade(Except for the potato things). The meat had been marinating for days. It was all so good! (Of course, I didn't taste it 'til about 6:30) Also, before I arrived my uncle and Carl(the other guy helping)(who by the way is funny and fun to work with; he's like a class clown with a heart for the Lord and a head of gray hair!!!)(and the dad of the girls I babysat that morning.) had mixed together the fruit that was chopped yesterday and put them in all the cups. about a half hour before the meal we put them out on the table (after we had put the salad on.) Then my uncle remembered that he had forgotten to add the bananas, so I got Ben to help me chop them while the other helpers individually placed about two in each cup. (There only were four of us for most of the time- me, my uncle, C. and C.'s oldest daughter Kiersten. But at about 2{the wedding was at 2:30} about 5-7 more people came to help.) So to cut a long story short, we served the food in a buffet line. Then when they were done we went around to all the tables handing out the dessert. Then we took dirty dishes back. Then when people started leaving we could really take ALL the dishes and thoroughly clean the tables. Now remember, this was like 19 tables with more than 130 settings(I just did the math- it's 149) and each person has like 4 plates and 2 cups, plus silverware and all the other things that were put on each table. Then imagine all the trash(napkins, leftover food, used sugar packets, tea bags, etc.) So it took quite awhile to wash all the dishes, even though we had one of those commercial hot water washers where you slide trays with dirty dishes in one end and close the door, and when it's done you open the door and slide it out the other end. It's hard to explain. And the kitchen was a mess, that took a while. And the really ironic thing is that we didn't have to tear down the tables and chairs, in fact, we had to bring out like 20-30 more (plus 8 chairs for each of those) because there was a memorial service for two missionaries who had died in a car crash in Africa last week. Wedding one day, funeral(nearly) the next. How odd. So then we went out to Friendly's when we finally finished at 8:30. Apparently that is somewhat of a tradition, Friendly's after working a wedding. While there we kind of compared stories of people complaining, at this wedding and others. Do you realize that not one person that helped bring this meal together was paid? But then I must also realize that most of these people don't know that. But still, there's no call to be rude or impatient. But Friendly's was mostly fun. We laughed so hard and so often that Ben tells me people were looking at us. I didn't notice! So we came home and I took a long hot shower/bath. It felt SO good. Tomorrow is church, then the family reunion at 4.(I hadn't realized it would start that late! I wish it was earlier, because then Ben and I have to drive home and that'll take a while. and I work tomorrow at 5am, too. oh, well.) I can't wait to be home! So goodnight dear friends(and not so dear friend-popstardiva). Current mood: |
